Nunee Health Centre: Clinic Services

Nunee reception is responsible for patient admission to the health centre. They book appointments, update general patient information, and answer booking related inquiries.
If this's your first visit, please bring your Alberta Health Card and Treaty ID (if applicable), when using the services of Nunee Health Centre.

Reception is located at the main entrance area when you enter the parking lot.
Nunee Health Centre Laboratory Services includes biochemistry, immunology, hematology, coagulation, and an outpatient collection area.
Nurses and paramedics provide services for the community of Fort Chipewyan and the surrounding area - a population of approximately 1,400. The nurse in charge oversees the program, and is responsible for quality management, infection control and lab safety.
The laboratory provides service in support of all outpatient clinical programs for NHBS.
Laboratory services are provided to the community by Nunee’s nursing and paramedic team on
Mondays and Thursdays from 8:00am to 9:45am.
Bloodwork and other labs are drawn and sent to DynaLife in Fort Chipewyan for testing.
NHBS is part of Alberta NetCare so timely 24-hour point of care results are now available.

The Radiography department is responsible for General Radiography using x-rays to produce images of the structures inside the body; examining the patient for body anomalies, such as broken bones, tumors, diseases or malfunctions of various organs by producing diagnostic images, ready for the physician’s interpretation.
Major responsibilities for the radiographer include: image production through positioning of patients, operation of clinical instrumentation, radiation safety, patient care, quality control and image manipulation and processing.
Examinations are quick and painless.
X-Ray examinations are generally performed on a drop-in basis during normal operating hours. Doctor requisitions are required and provided by the patient’s own doctors, specialists or our own in-house doctors.

The NHBS has on-site medication pick-up services for prescribed drugs as part of primary health care delivery in Fort Chipewyan. As part of a multidisciplinary team, the medication management staff provide pick-up services to patients, and other members of the health care team.
Services Include:
- Work with clients pharmacy to provide support for clients requiring prescription re-fills.
- Identify and resolve any potential medication concerns.
- Explain how to effectively manage your medications.
- Provide general health and lifestyle tips manages your medication.
- Coordinate an appointment with a medical staff to discuss any changes to your medications with you.
- Can print a full list of your medications and allergies in wallet-sized format, so you can keep it with you at all times.
You can bring unused medication and used syringes to the pharmacy for environmentally responsible disposal.
After Hours Department
NHBS provides emergency services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

- Medical staff are on-call only and DO NOT STAY on-site after hours. Walk-in patients will be asked if they have called either of these numbers before arrival. This will ensure Security determines the appropriate response, to provide you with the best level care possible.
- Ring Doorbell located at Emergency Room or Main Entrance when you arrive. Entrance to Emergency is on the South side of the building, follow the signage.
The client will then be triaged by an nurse and/or paramedic will be asked to provide a history of their medical complaint, report any medications they are taking and an nursing assessment will be completed. Triage scoring is done at this time to help determine a pathway for care.

Our physiotherapist provides a holistic and client-centered approach to support Fort Chipewyan community members living with pain, movement difficulties and disability. Through education and advice, hands on treatment and exercise clients can improve their pain, reduce the impact of chronic disease and engage in an active lifestyle.
Individualized treatment plans are developed based on the needs of the client.
Services are available to children and adults of all ages and may help with the following:
- Supporting healthy neuro-motor development and promoting active lifestyles for infants, children and youth
- School-based physiotherapy & exercise programs
- Assessing and treating injuries and chronic pain
- Rehabilitation following discharge from hospital and/or surgery
- Developing exercise programs to manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart conditions, arthritis
- Women’s health physiotherapy: helping women with symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction (incontinence, pelvic pain) or pregnancy-related discomfort
- Education and strengthening programs to prevent falls and maintain independence
- Community based exercise programs to encourage healthy movement and fitness

The Nutrition Education Program provides opportunities for clientele to gain experience in developing skills in decision making based on accurate nutrition information that meets identified needs.
Nutrition Services include:
- Pre and post pregnancy nutritional support services are available to all new and expecting mothers;
- Breastfeeding support, introduction of solid foods and baby food making.
- Toddler nutrition and food allergies.
- Family and individual meal planning education.
- Childhood nutrition intake for optimal growth and immunity support.
- Nutritional needs for Elders.
- Dietary assessment across the lifecycle to support medical nutrition therapy to manage chronic and acute disease conditions. (ISB, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, anemia, illness and immunity).
- Medical nutrition therapy to support home and community care program and outside health professional referrals.
- Support diabetes prevention through screening and traditional lifestyles.
- Empower community organizations to provide nutritionally balanced meals and snacks to Nation members.
- Develop, implement and evaluate nutritional and wellness workshops and presentations.
- Implore food sovereignty and traditional foods value for balanced nutrition and wellness.
- Works to improve nutritional well-being and enhance self-management of health, as well as reducing risk of chronic disease.
