History
Historically, all health services provided to Fort Chipewyan community was provided directly by the Medical Services Branch (MSB) of Health Canada through a local nursing station. This included physician and nursing services and dental and vision care. There were four nurses and a physician visit every two weeks.
MSB (later known as First Nations and Inuit Health Branch, FNIHB) started transferring control of health services to First Nation and Inuit communities in the 1980’s. In 1988, with support of MSB, the Nunee Health Authority was established in Fort Chipewyan. In February 1990, the Health Authority was incorporated as Nunee Health Board Society. Over the 1990’s Nunee grew so by 1999, there were over 40 full time employees, several buildings and a five-year agreement with FNIHB for almost $29 million.
